Finally, a local brewery gets around to combining two of the best things in the world: coffee and beer. Throw in some cold pizza and Chinese food and bachelors all over the world would have this for breakfast.
This limited release from the folks at Petaluma’s Lagunitas Brewing Co. adds plenty of Hard Core Coffee from Sebastopol, lending it nice, dark Columbian notes that mellow the slight alcohol finish. As an 8.3 percent brew, maybe this one is a little strong for breakfast after all.
The beer is pretty translucent for a stout, looking more like an iced coffee whose cubes have melted. It pours with a quickly dispersing cappuccino-colored head with a beautiful brown body fading to tobacco sunburst around the penumbra.
Living in Marin County, I fully appreciate how spoiled I am by living down the road from Lagunitas. They really have a knack for producing big, strong brews that make a statement but don’t overpower. I haven’t met one of their offerings I haven’t loved and I’m looking forward to giving this one another try.
